1. Service Overview

GeoAPI.info ("the Service") is a free geolocation and country data API service. By accessing or using the API, you agree to comply with these Terms of Service.

2. Rate Limiting and IP Blocking Policy

Rate Limits

• 100 requests per minute per IP address
• Rate limits are enforced using a sliding window algorithm
• Rate limit headers are included in all responses
• Exceeding rate limits will result in HTTP 429 responses

Prohibited Activities

The following activities may result in immediate IP blocking:

• Attempting to circumvent rate limits through IP rotation, proxies, or other means
• Making excessive requests that impact service performance
• Using automated tools without respecting rate limits
• Engaging in any activity that disrupts or interferes with the service
• Using the service for illegal or harmful purposes
• Attempting to reverse engineer or exploit vulnerabilities

3. Data Availability and Service Reliability

Service Limitations

• No Uptime Guarantees: The service may be unavailable at any time for maintenance, updates, or technical issues
• Data Accuracy: Country data, geolocation information, and holiday calendars may be inaccurate or outdated
• No Real-time Updates: Data is not guaranteed to be current and may not reflect recent changes
• Service Changes: API endpoints, data formats, and functionality may change without notice
• No SLA: The service provides no service level agreements or performance guarantees

Users should not rely on this service for critical applications, emergency situations, or any use case where accuracy or availability is essential.

4. Data Scraping and Automated Collection Policy

Prohibited Activities Include:

• Web scraping or automated data extraction using scripts, bots, or crawlers
• Systematic downloading of country data, holiday calendars, or datasets
• Bulk collection of API responses for redistribution or commercial use
• Creating mirrors, copies, or derivative datasets from the service
• Using the API to populate competing services or data warehouses
• Automated harvesting of flag images, geographic data, or other assets

Legitimate API Usage: Normal application integration that respects rate limits and makes reasonable requests as part of genuine software functionality is encouraged and permitted.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree to use the service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these terms. You may not:

• Use the service for any illegal activities
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the systems
• Distribute malware or conduct attacks through the service
• Resell or redistribute the data without permission
• Use the service to harm others or violate privacy rights
• Attempt to overwhelm the infrastructure

6. Intellectual Property and third-party data

The API service, documentation, and underlying technology are protected by intellectual property rights. While the API is free to use within these terms, that does not transfer ownership of third-party datasets to you.

ISO country and subdivision lists (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Parts of this service—including ISO 3166-1 identifiers such as alpha-3 codes, the official English short name, the numeric country code, and ISO 3166-2 subdivisions returned from /api/country/subdivisions—are based on data from the world_countries project (Stefan Gabos), used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0). The legally binding text is the license deed at that link; the following is a plain-language summary for visitors, not legal advice:

• Attribution (BY): If you share that licensed material (or your adaptation of it), you generally need to give appropriate credit, link to the license, and indicate if you changed the material—consistent with the license terms.
• ShareAlike (SA): If you adapt the licensed material and share your adaptation, you generally must license your contribution under the same or a compatible license, as set out in CC BY-SA 4.0.
• Your use case matters: Whether copying API responses into an app UI, a cached file, or a republishable dataset triggers these obligations depends on what you do with the data. When in doubt, read the full license or consult a lawyer.

Subdivision responses also include a small JSON attribution block as a convenience; it does not replace your duty to comply with the license when you redistribute or adapt the data.

Other open data in this API

Additional country facts (capital, population, languages, etc.) are compiled from datasets in the tradition of samayo/country-json (typically MIT-licensed upstream). Flag SVGs served under /flags/ come from lipis/flag-icons (MIT). Holiday rules use the date-holidays package—see that project for its license and notices. IP geolocation fields come from Cloudflare’s platform, not from a static file in this service.

7. Privacy and Data Collection

The service may collect and store IP addresses, request patterns, and usage statistics for security, analytics, and service improvement purposes. Personal data is not sold to third parties.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, GeoAPI.info and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages resulting from your use of the service, including but not limited to:

• Service downtime or unavailability
• Inaccurate or outdated data
• Financial losses due to service issues
• Data breaches or security incidents
• Any other damages arising from service use

9. Termination

The service reserves the right to terminate or suspend access immediately, without prior notice, for any reason, including breach of these terms or any behavior deemed inappropriate.

10. Changes to Terms

The service reserves the right to modify these terms at any time without prior notice. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms. It is your responsibility to review these terms periodically.
